2016 first-round pick German Rubtsov showcases lethal release in QMJHL outing

There’s a reason the Philadelphia Flyers are regarded to have the best prospect pool in the entire NHL.

Center German Rubstov was the Flyers’ first-round selection in the 2016 NHL Entry Draft (22nd overall). The 6-foot, 190 pounds forward is currently playing in the QMJHL with the Chicoutimi Saguenéens. His team is among the worst clubs in the league, with the Saguenéens currently sitting second-last in the East Division.

Rubstov is having a very productive start to the campaign, however, managing three goals and 11 points in 11 games. While Chicoutimi got pounded 8-2 in one of their games over the weekend, Rubstov scored both the team’s goals and showcased his lethal sniping ability in the process.

The Flyers had the opportunity to send Rubtsov to the AHL this season if they had wanted, but instead chose to send him to Canadian junior. The 19-year-old is likely still at least a year away from joining the big club, but should get the opportunity to really garner attention at the upcoming World Junior Championships.Rubstov did play for Team Russia in last year’s tournament, but wasn’t used much, failing to record a point in five contests and exiting early with a broken nose. He’ll likely see a more significant role this time around and could use the tournament to really raise some eyebrows.
