2018 NHL Draft: Flyers select Joel Farabee 14th overall

Welcome to Philadelphia, Joel Farabee.

It wasn’t the eventful night some had hoped for the Flyers, but the team got their man, holding firm at pick 14 and selecting USNTDP left winger, Joel Farabee.

Farabee is a Boston University commit and had an outstanding year with United States National Team Development Program in 2017-18. He lit up the scoresheet with 40 points in 26 games (15 G, 25 A) with the USNTDP in the USHL and recorded 76 points in 62 games (33 G, 43 A) with the U-18 National team.

Joel’s rated as a 200-foot player and we can expect him to be killing penalties sometime in the future. He’s got great speed and seems to find himself in the right place at the right time on the offensive end. At 6’0″ and just over 160 pounds, however, he’s going to need to add some big time weight during his time at BU.

Farabee rocked the ‘C’ for the U-18 National team where he played alongside Oliver Wahlstrom and expected 2019 #1 overall pick, Jack Hughes. Those two stars on his line clogging the scoresheet might have caused some to overlook Farabee in this year’s draft, but others might consider him wildly underrated.

Unfortunately, he’s compared himself to Jake Guentzel in the past. We don’t like Guentzel but would gladly take a player like him on the Flyers. Deeper and admittedly, more exciting comparisons have been drawn to Zach Parise and Joe Pavelski (both Americans, not a big deal).

Of course, like any middle or late first round pick, Farabee will spend some time developing before he’s NHL ready. His hands and speed are there, fifteen to twenty more pounds and a little IQ maturation in college should make Flyers fans happy with what Farabee will bring to the table in the future. Not to mention, he’s already a Philly guy.

Love to see it.
