Flyers 0, Wild 3 Post-Game: Hockey is bad and the Flyers aren’t much better

After getting shut out for the fourth time on Saturday in just 17 games, the Flyers were looking for revenge tonight against the Minnesota Wild.

The Flyers have been very inconsistent as of late with alot of injuries still plaguing them, and they have been getting next to no secondary scoring. The good news is that both Nolan Patrick and Andrew MacDonald are both close to returning and both travelled with the Flyers on this two-game road trip.

First period

It only took 12 seconds for Nino Niederreiter to score the first goal of the game after Eric Staal picked Ivan Provorovs pocket and delivered a pass to Niederreiter who made no mistake and beat Brian Elliott up high.

Flyers have been struggling with their secondary scoring for most of the season and the first period tonight was no different. Hakstol decided before the game to change some of the lines to try and get other lines going. Jordan Weal moving to center was one of his moves and although they had some decent zone time, they didnt really create alot of chances.

Brian Elliott was sharp from the start and he was the only reason Wild didn’t go up to a 3-0 lead in the first period.

Second period

Flyers finally started to create more chances in the second period. Laughton got robbed twice in close on Dubnyk who has been red hot for the last three games for the Wild. Voracek and Giroux both created grade A chances but Dubnyk was playing out of his mind.

Wild created alot of chances in the second period aswell and at one point they created havoc in the Flyers zone for about 2 minutes but Brian Elliott has really stepped up his game in hist past few starts.

Taylor Leier was the Flyer who got closest to scoring when he with just a couple minutes left of the second period hit the post with his shot.

Third period

This game was a battle between two goalies who were both playing great hockey for their teams.

Dale Weise got denied by Dubnyk on a breakaway in the third period, which ended up being Flyers best chance in the third period to tie the game. Elliott also saved a breakaway chance for the Wild. Wild and Dubnyk ended up winning the game 3-0 after two open net goals late in the third. Dubnyk recorded his third straight shutout.

Stars of the game

First star

Devan Dubnyk – Hottest goaltender in the league right now. Recorded his third straight shutout. Easily the number one star of the game.

Second star

Nino Niederreiter– Scored what ended up being the game winner just 12 seconds into the game. Had a couple of other good opportunities

Third star

Tyler Ennis – Ennis was all over the place tonight, he had 4 shots on goal had a breakaway chance denied in the third.

Quick thoughts

The Flyers need to find a way to create more high quality chances. There has been next to no secondary scoring since all the injuries started to pile on. Whenever Couturiers line has been shut down no one else has stepped up. Flyers need more from players like Simmonds, Weal, Konecny, Filppula. Without them stepping up their game the Flyers hopes of making the playoffs look very slim.

Brian Elliott was great yet again tonight. He kept the Flyers in the game early on when the Flyers were still trying to get into the game. He made a couple of key saves late in the third aswell to give his team a chance to tie the game and possibly get a point.

Next game is 8:00 PM on Thursday against the Winnipeg Jets.
