Flyers 1, Hurricanes 4: Flyers pointstreak comes to an end

Updated: March 1, 2018 at 10:49 pm by Johan Gartner

The Flyers had won six straight games and nine of their last 10 games.

Tonight they got a visit from the Carolina Hurricanes, who are chasing a wild card spot.

Taylor Leier replaced Jordan Weal in tonight’s game, but other than that, all the lines remained the same from the game against Montreal a couple of days ago.

No surprise that Petr Mrazek got the start after his shutout last game.

First period

The Flyers didn’t have a great start to the game, so when Taylor Leier took a high-sticking penalty on his first shift, you sort of knew they were going to be in trouble.

The Flyers penalty kill has been one of the worst in the league all season and just when the Penalty ended, Justin Williams won a battle in front of Mrazek and scored the opening goal of the period.

It took the Flyers about 12 minutes before they got going offensively and they created a few chances before the period ended including a Konecny breakaway, but Cam Ward made the save.

The Flyers were the better team at the end of the period, but couldn’t capitalize on their chances so far.

Second period

The second period went exactly like the first one started. The Flyers played sloppy and the Canes took advantage scoring two more goals in the second.

Whenever the Flyers did manage to create chances, Cam Ward had the answer.

The Flyers headed into the third period with a 3-0 deficit.

Third period

Flyers finally started to play well and it paid off straight away when Travis Konecny scored on a beautiful pass from Sean Couturier.

Tonight just wasn’t the Flyers night. A Lot of strange bounces and a lot of players having off games. After the Flyers managed to capitalize on a late powerplay, the Hurricanes would regain a three goal lead when Sebastian Aho beat Mrazek glove side. It was the final nail in the coffin. The Flyers 12-game pointstreak has come to an end.

Stars of the game

First star

Justin Williams – Williams scored twice and added another assist and he was a easy pick as the first star tonight.

Second star

Sebastian Aho – Scored two goals and was one of Canes best players as per usual. The young Finnish forward is having quite the season.

Third star

Jordan Staal – Staal had a solid game. You always know what you get from Jordan Staal, and tonight he lead the way with his two-way game.

The Flyers return to action Saturday against the Tampa Bay Lightning at 1:00 PM ET
