Flyers 3, Red Wings 2 (OT): Konecny is clutch

The Flyers entered tonight’s game in a wildcard spot after winning 8 of their last 10 games. Brian Elliott got the start in goal and all the lines and defense pairings remained the same from the Capitals game a couple of days ago. Flyers could with a win and some luck in other games move into second place in the Metropolitan Division.

First period

Flyers havnt been a very good first period team this year and tonight was no different. The Flyers passing was sloppy and their effort as a whole was non-existent and they were pretty lucky to only be down 1-0 after the first 20 minutes. Jonathan Ericsson scored the opening goal after his shot deflected off Brandon Mannings leg and in.

Second period

Flyers were much better in the second period, creating alot of chances and offensive zone pressure and it would pay off straight away when Andrew MacDonald score the Flyers first goal of the game.

Both goalies made great saves and got lucky with shots going off the post and out but the Flyers would finally break through with just 30 seconds left of the period when Jakub Voracek scored on the powerplay. The Red Wings challenged the goal but the call wasnt overturned and the Flyers head into the third period with a 2-1 lead.

Third period

It was all Red Wings in the third period and they would tie the game up when Nielsen scored on a rebound infront of Elliott. Flyers didnt create anything in the entire period and were lucky to get the game to overtime, especially after Tyler Bertuzzi missed the open net TWICE.

It only took Travis Konecny to score the overtime winner against the Capitals on sunday, and tonight it only took him 27 seconds yet again before he scored to give the Flyers a 3-2 victory they did not deserve. The officials would review the goal but Konecny was onside and the goal counted. Two huge points for Orange & black.

Stars of the game

First star

Travis Konecny– No Flyer is hotter right now. Konecny has scored two straight overtime winners and was one of very few Flyers who were actually good tonight.

Second star

Jakub Voracek – Scored a goal and added an assist on another. Voracek has been consistent all year and tonight was no different. Solid game by the czech.

Third star

Luke Glendenning – The Red Wings forward assisted on the two Red Wings goals and he was one of the better Red Wings players tonight.

Flyers return on Thursday when they play the Tampa Bay Lightning at 7:00PM ET
