Flyers 4, Golden Knights 1: Hard fought win in the desert

Updated: February 12, 2018 at 12:31 am by Johan Gartner

The Flyers headed into tonight’s game on a three-game winning streak. Yesterday they even won in a shootout, and that’s not something us Flyers fans get to see that often. Brian Elliott got injured in that shootout, so Michal Neuvirth got the start against Marc Andre Fleury and the Golden Knights.

Tonight’s meeting was the first ever between the two clubs.

First period

Vegas who have been one of the best teams so far this season started the game the best, they created alot of chances and Flyers never really got going early. Golden Knights scored the first goal of the game when Brayden McNabbs wrister beat Neuvirth cleanly from the blueline.

With just over two minutes left of the period the Flyers would tie it all up again when Sean Couturier scored on a deflection in front of the net after a beautiful passing play by Claude Giroux and Travis Konecny

Second period

The second period was all Golden Knights in the scoring chance department but Neuvirth was solid in goal and managed to keep the score tied. With about 5 minutes left the Flyers finally started creating chances and offensive zone pressure and they scored two quick goals before the period ended to give them a two goal lead heading into the third.

Third period

The third period was exactly like the second, the Golden Knights dominated the play and Flyers never really created any pressure. Michal Neuvirth was really strong in goal tonight, he saved 38 out of 39 shots and was the reason the Flyers managed to maintain their lead that would lead them to their fourth straight win. Radko Gudas would score a late empty net goal for the final 4-1 score.

Stars of the game

First star

Sean Couturier – The Selke trophy favorite is continuing his strong season after scoring a goal and adding two assists tonight. Couturier has developed into the complete first center who does it all. Great game from number 14 tonight.

Second star

Brayden McNabb – Scored Vegas lone goal and was solid on the blueline for Vegas.

Third star

Michal Neuvirth – Had to step in in the middle of the shootout last night and shut the door. Was unbeatable tonight after the soft-ish goal in the first. The main reason the Flyers won tonight.

Flyers return on Tuesday against the New Jersey Devils at 7:00PM ET.
