Flyers 4, Hurricanes 2: Huge third period garners win

Updated: March 17, 2018 at 10:28 pm by Johan Gartner

The Flyers were red-hot throughout the whole month of February, but since then they’ve struggled badly, losing seven out of their last eight, including last game which was a so called “must win” against the Blue Jackets.

Dave Hakstol made a couple of changes before tonight’s game against the Hurricanes. He switch Travis Konecny and Michael Raffl and also decided to give Alex Lyon the start in goal after being great in relief of a struggling Petr Mrazek against the Blue Jackets.

Jordan Weal was also back in the lineup instead of Jori Lehterä.

First period

Just a couple of minutes in Ivan Provorov made a beautiful move and hit the post with his backhand shot and it turned out to be the Flyers best chance of the period.

Other than that the Flyers never really created much, especially at even strength. Flyers had two powerplays in the first but the Flyers powerplay has struggled as of late and so far tonight it’s been the same old story.

Jordan Staal would score the first goal of the game when the Flyers failed to clear and Staal scored on a deflection. Lyon had no chance on the goal.

Alex Lyon kept the score 1-0 when he made two incredible pad stops on Noah Hanifin in close. Lyon was the best Flyer of the first period.

Second period

Flyers struggle continued in the second, the Hurricanes kept pressuring the Flyers but Lyon was solid in goal.

Konecny had a breakaway in the second period but Cam Ward stood tall and made a glove save to keep the score 1-0. At the end of the period Andrew MacDonald got a double minor for highsticking but the Flyers managed to kill off the first minute of the powerplay before the end of the period.

Alex Lyon and Nolan Patrick have been the best Flyers players tonight.

It’s only 1-0 heading into the third, but the Flyers really need to step up their game if they want to leave Raleigh with a point or two.

Third period

It took the third period about eight minutes before it really kicked off when Konecny deflected a Sanheim wrister to tie the game at 1-1.

Just two minutes later the Hurricanes would score to give them the lead again when Slavin walked around Michael Raffl and roofed it behind Alex Lyon.

Two minutes after that Jakub Voracek would tie it all up again in a crazy couple of minutes when he scored on a gorgeous move to beat Ward up close. Oskar Lindblom got the primary assist on the goal, which means he recorded his first NHL point.

Flyers would get their first lead of the game when Filppula scored on a breakaway.

Michael Raffl scored the final goal of the game in the open net in the final minutes of the game. Flyers finally got a win!
