Flyers 4, Leafs 2 post-game: 4 in a row!

Updated: December 13, 2017 at 12:21 am by Johan Gartner

After winning all three games on the Canadian road trip the Flyers returned back home to face the Toronto Maple Leafs who entered the game without their star center Auston Matthews. Flyers are currently on a three game winning streak after the horrific 10 game losing streak. Flyers have been a poor home team this year, but were looking to change that tonight.

With Michal Neuvirth still out with a injury, Dave Hakstol went with Brian Elliott yet again who has been the Flyers best player in recent games and was awarded as the 3rd star of the week in the NHL.

First period

Flyers and Leafs were both creating chances and it took about 9 minutes before Flyers went on the board. Claude Giroux scored the opening goal of the night by a beautiful one time slapshot after Sean Couturier won the faceoff.

Just seconds later tho the Leafs would strike back when Patrick Marleau’s shot beat Elliott on the blocker side. A goal Brian Elliott would most likely want back.

Second period

Flyers special teams hasnt been a strength this season but after going 6 for 6 on the penaltykill on the roadtrip they were looking to build off that performance. Former Flyer James Van Riemsdyk had other plans and scored the Leafs 2-1 goal late in the second period.

Flyers had a couple of great chances but Fredrik Andersen made alot of key saves to keep Leafs in the lead leading into the third period.

Third period

Flyers still hadnt won a game after trailing heading into the third period but tonight was the night to break that curse. Flyers scored 3 goals in the third period including the beautiful game winning goal by Couturier assisted by the captain Giroux.

The Flyers were the better team throughout most of the game and deserved the win. Flyers have now won four in a row and will need to build on this win against the Buffalo Sabres on Thursday to make up for the ground they lost during the 10-game losing streak.

Winning is fun gang.

Stars of the game

First star

Claude Giroux – Scored the first goal of the night and had an incredible assist on the game-winning goal. Giroux has been great all year and tonight was no difference. The captain is back, and he has never looked better.

Second star

Travis Konecny – Benched, demoted, criticized. Konecny has faced alot of heat since joining the league last year. I personally think he’s been pretty good even when he hasnt produced this year. He has always created alot of chances but never really gotten awarded for it. Tonight he finally was. Even when he was demoted to the fourth line.

Third star

James Van Riemsdyk – Scored one of the Leafs two goals. JVR is always a threat around the net and tonight was no different.

Flyers play Buffalo Sabres on thursday at 7:00PM ET.
