Flyers 5, Islanders 1: Phantoms explode in preseason win

Updated: September 18, 2018 at 10:32 pm by Johan Gartner

The preseason continued tonight when the Flyers went to New York to face the Islanders for the third time in three days.

Tonight’s lineup was headlined by the Lindblom-Patrick-Konecny line while most of the rest of the main NHL team was resting after the 3-1 victory last night.

Anthony Stolarz played the full game after Alex Lyon got injured during the warmups.

First Period

Neither team created much to start off the period but the Patrick line was the one line from the Flyers that actually created some offensive zone pressure. Konecny had a couple of chances but Robin Lehner stood tall. Anthony Stolarz who missed pretty much all of last year due to injury had a great first period when he made a couple of key saves to keep the score tied 0-0. Especially on a couple of Barzal chances.

With around 7 minutes left of the period Flyers would break the tie when James De Haas scored on a slapshot with a great screen from Colin McDonald. The Flyers got a chance to build on the lead when they went on the powerplay but they couldnt convert.

Second Period

The islanders tied the game back up when David Quenneville scored on a one-timer. It was a shot that Stolarz most likely would want to get back.

After the Islanders goal the Flyers came out guns blazing, scoring three goals in around four minutes.

Carsen Twarynski kicked the goal frenzy off when he sniped a quickwrist shot that beat Robin Lehner clean from above the hash marks.

Just a few minutes later Varone made it 3-1 when he picked his corner on a delayed penalty.

To cap it all off in the second Danick Martel scored his first goal of the preseason when he came in on a 2-on-1 and decided to go for the shot instead of the pass and beat Lehner blocker side.

Third Period

Flyers continued to control the play in the third and whenever the Islanders got a chance to get back into the game Anthony Stolarz was in the way. Stolarz had a very solid game tonight making a couple of key saves.

Twarynski had a chance to score his second goal of the night but missed high and wide on the breakaway.

Jori Lehterä made it 5-1 when he tapped in a rebound infront of Gibson.

Quick thoughts

T.J Brennan recorded 3 assists and was one of the better players on the ice tonight.

Stolarz made 30 saves on 31 shots including a couple of great ones when the game was still close.

The Patrick line created alot of offensive zone pressure and altho they didnt get on the scoreboard (except Konecny with an assist) they were great all night.

Twarynski is having himself a good camp, he scored a goal tonight and was good all over the ice tonight.

Rubtsov is also having a good camp, showing alot of good two way play. Need to show abit more offense but his defensive game is very strong.

Raffl had a good game. You always know what you get from Michael Raffl. He is just solid. A solid hockeyplayer.

Overall a great game tonight by the Phantom- sorry Flyers.
