The Flyers wanted to avoid losing their third straight game tonight when they faced off against the Tampa Bay Lightning — who just happen to be the best team in the league.
Coach Dave Hakstol made some lineup changes before the game, including the return of Brandon Manning who has been out with a hand injury the past couple of weeks.
Manning replaced Travis Sanheim who was a healthy scratch. Jori Lehterä was also back in the lineup, replacing Taylor Leier on the fourth line.
Filppula and Patrick switched lines again to try and create some secondary scoring.
Brian Elliott got the start as per usual even though Michal Neuvirth is back from his injury.
The Flyers have really struggled (as per usual) in the first period this year and tonight was no different. It didn’t take long for the Lightning to capitalize on the powerplay on a great shot by Steven Stamkos.
Flyers had some chances but Lightning went into intermission with a 1-0 lead.
The Flyers started creating more and more chances in the second period and their powerplay finally broke through twice in the first 10 minutes. Simmonds and Gostisbehere were the goalscorers.
Brayden Point tied it all back up again after a beautiful passing play.
It looked like the period would end in a 2-2 tie heading into the third but Sean Couturier had other plans when he scored with just 12 seconds left of the period on a rebound infront of Budaj.
Brandon Manning extended the Flyers lead to 4-2 just two minutes into the third period when he scored on his own rebound after a nice passing play by Konecny & Giroux.
A few minutes later when the Flyers were on the Powerplay, Ivan Provorov broke his stick on a slapshot attempt and Tyler Johnson scored a shorthanded goal on a beautiful wrist shot.
The Lightning were pressuring the Flyers trying to tie the game up, especially on the powerplay but Flyers survived and managed to kill the penalty off after a huge MacDonald clear at the end of the powerplay.
The Flyers managed to shut down the Lightning for the rest of the third period and Valtteri Filppula scored an empty net goal making it a 5-3 game.
Impressive win by the Flyers!
Stars of the game
Claude Giroux – The Flyers captain has really stepped up his game this year. He (and Jake Voracek) are both top 5 in scoring now and Giroux has scored 18 points in his last 11 games, including three assists tonight.
Brian Elliott – Elliott has been one, if not the best, Flyer for quite some time now and tonight was no different. He made some really difficult stops, especially at the end of the game when the Lightning tried to tie the game up.
Tyler Johnson – Scored a shorthanded goal in the third to bring the game back to a one-goal game.
The Flyers play the Pittsburgh Penguins on Tuesday at 7:00PM ET.
