The Flyers signed two key AHL players Thursday, announcing a two-year, two-way contract extension for defenseman Reece Willcox and a one-year, two-way deal for forward Danick Martel.

Willcox recorded a career-high 15 points in 57 regular-season games with the Phantoms in 2017-18, registering a plus-2 rating in the process. He was second on the team with a plus-5 rating during Lehigh Valley’s 2018 Calder Cup run. The 26-year-old blueliner served as captain in his senior season at Cornell University before making the jump to professional hockey. In 111 career regular-season games with the Flyers’ AHL affiliate, Willcox has posted 25 points.

The Flyers also signed forward Danick Martel to a one-year deal worth $715, 000. The 23-year-old excelled in the AHL last season, posting 25 goals and 40 points in 59 regular-season games. Martel also netted four goals in 13 playoff games as the Phantoms reached the Conference Finals. The 5’8″ sniper has tallied at least 20 goals in all three of his full seasons in Lehigh Valley and is regarded as one of the league’s best scorers.

A two-way contract means there are two different salaries associated with Willcox and Martel. Their salary will depend on whether they are assigned to the AHL or NHL.
