Giroux notches three points, Neuvirth stops 35 shots, as Flyers defeat Blues 4-2

Updated: December 11, 2015 at 6:45 am by Brady Trettenero

There was only one team in the entire NHL Claude Giroux hadn’t scored against. Giroux fixed that Thursday night.

The Flyers’ captain scored a highlight reel goal in the second period and added two assists, propelling the Philadelphia Flyers to a 4-2 win over the St.Louis Blues Thursday night at the Scottrade Center.

With the goal against the Blues, Giroux has now scored against all the other 29 teams in the NHL.

With the Flyers leading the Blues 2-1 late in the second period, Giroux put on a dazzling display to score the eventual game-winning goal. Giroux took a pass from Brayden Schenn before breaking in on the Blues’ defense. The captain completely undressed a Blues’ defenseman, before closing in on goaltender Brian Elliott. Giroux used his filthy hands to quickly take the puck to the backhand and slide it past the outstretched leg of the Blues’ netminder.

Matt Read, Michael Raffl and Ryan White (empty-net goal) also scored for Philadelphia, who have now won four straight games on the road for the first time since Dec. 2-15, 2011.

Schenn had two assists for the Flyers, while Michal Neuvirth stopped 35 of 37 in goal, helping the Philadelphia win in St. Louis for the first time since Dec. 17, 2005.

With the win, the Flyers advance to 12-11-6 on the year.

Robbi Fabbri and David Backes scored for the Blues, who outshot the Flyers 37-29.

After Fabrri opened the scoring for the Blues 1:35 into the second period, Raffl struck for the Flyers not even two minutes later. Brayden Schenn made a nice pivot around the circle before centering the puck. It was redirected by Raffl past Elliott, knotting the game 1-1.

The Flyers built momentum after scoring their first goal, which was their first goal scored at the Scottrade Center in the past 171:00. They had been shut out in three of their past four visits.

Matt Read gave the Flyers the lead 6:39 into the middle frame. After Michael Del Zotto fired a shot on net, Read was able to coral the loose puck in the crease. He took it around the pad of the outstretched Elliott before tucking it in the goal cage while he was being knocked down.

Giroux made it 3-1 with a highlight reel goal in the final two minutes of the period.

David Backes got a goal back for the Blues in the third period as they gained momentum and came on strong, but 13 third-period saves from Neuvirth and an empty-net goal from Ryan White sealed the victory for Philadelphia.

Key Stats/ Takeaways

  • Claude Giroux is on fire. The captain notched three points Thursday and now has seven points in his last four games. He’s up to a team-leading 11 goals and 27 points in 29 games on the season. Three of his last four games have been multi-point outings. No player in the NHL has more points than Giroux since the start of the 2010-11 season
  • Radko Gudas looked great in his first game back from suspension, recording a game-high plus-4 rating, four shots on goal, seven hits and three blocked shots in 22:53 of ice time. Easily his best outing in a Flyers uniform to date
  • Brayden Schenn had a very strong evening alongside Giroux on the top line, picking up two assists. His crafty vision has been on display of late as he’s now riding a three-game point streak and is up to 14 points on the season
  • Michal Neuvirth continues to impress in goal. He’s leading the entire NHL with a .938 save percentage and has won four of his last five games. His last regulation loss came Nov.10 against Colorado
  • Jakub Voracek logged just 13:08 of ice time tonight. Flyers are winning right now, but this is could be a bit of an issue. A player of that caliber simply needs to be seeing the ice more
