Gostisbehere helps tie it late, Voracek scores in OT to send Flyers past Hurricanes

Updated: November 15, 2015 at 1:02 am by Brady Trettenero

It took 17 games, but Jakub Voracek has finally scored. And boy, was it a big one.

The Czech winger redirected a perfect pass in the slot from defenseman Michael Del Zotto 37 seconds into overtime, propelling the Philadelphia Flyers to a 3-2 comeback win over the Carolina Hurricanes Saturday evening at the PNC Arena.

The Flyers entered the third period trailing the Hurricanes 2-1, but a fantastic play late in the period from recent call up Shayne Gostisbehere knotted the game at two and forced overtime.

With Philadelphia trailing Carolina 2-1 and under five minutes remaining in regulation, the visitors went to work in the offensive zone.

Brandon Manning sent a cross-ice pass along the blueline to his partner Gostisbehere, who dangled around a  Hurricanes forward before firing a shot on goal.

Wayne Simmonds redirected the shot past Hurricanes goaltender Cam Ward to tie the game 2-2 and help force overtime.

Luke Schenn also scored for the Flyers, who got a 19-save performance from goaltender Steve mason.

With the win, the Flyers advance to 6-8-3 on the season.

Elias Lindholm and Victor Rask scored for Carolina, who got two assists from Eric Staal.

The Flyers failed to generate any offense in the opening period, getting outshot 9-3. Lindholm put Carolina up 1-0 14:15 into the frame.

Lindholm banged in a rebound after a mad scramble in front of goaltender Mason. The play was made possible after a Flyers turnover that led to a 2-on-1 rush for the Hurricanes in the opposing direction.

Victor Rask put Carolina up 2-0 early in the second period on a power play, burying a pass from Eric Staal during another scramble around the Flyers crease.

Luke Schenn got the Flyers on the board with his second goal of the season 12:02 into the second period. Michael Raffl drove the puck to the net, but he was turned away by Ward. The rebound squirted out to the high circle, where Luke Schenn would jump on the loose puck and fire it on net. The shot beat a screened Ward to cut the Flyers deficit to one.

The Flyers were outshot 18-7 through two periods, but entered the final period trailing the Hurricanes 2-1.
