Luke Schenn scores, but Flyers fall 4-1 to Devils for second straight loss

Updated: October 29, 2015 at 10:27 pm by Brady Trettenero

Luke Schenn potted his first goal of the season, but it was nowhere near enough, as the Philadelphia Flyers suffered their second straight loss Thursday, dropping a 4-1 decision to the New Jersey Devils at the Wells Fargo Center.

Travis Zajac scored twice for New Jersey, while Kyle Palmieri had three points.

The Flyers got a 29-save performance in goal from Steve Mason, while Cory Schneider turned away all but one of the 28 shots he faced in the cage for the Devils.

The Flyers were outshot 14-7 in the opening period, but they escaped with a scoreless tie thanks to some great goaltending from Steve Mason. Mason’s best save arguably came midway through the period off Devils’ sniper Kyle Palmieri. Palmieri undressed Flyers’ forward R.J. Umberger in the high slot and fired a shot that was snatched up by the glove of Mason.

Luke Schenn got the Flyers on the board 15:44 into the second period with a wrist shot from the boards near the top off the circle that somehow got past goaltender Cory Schneider.

The Devils would go on to score four straight goals, however, including two power-play tallies, handing the Flyers an eventual 4-1 loss.

The Flyers, who were outplayed and outshot 33-28 on the night, are right back in action Friday against the Sabres.

The Devils  have now won five of their past six games after starting the season with four straight losses.

Key Stats/ Takeaways

  • Vincent Lecavalier made his season debut after being designated a healthy scratch for the Flyers’ first eight games. He assisted on Schenn’s goal, but logged just 7:16 of ice time
  • Goaltender Michal Neuvirth was taken off of injured reserve Wednesday and was the backup to Mason Thursday. He missed the past two games with an upper-body injury
  • Luke Schenn and Mart Streit are the only blueliners that have scored for the Flyers thus far
  • Jakub Voracek fired six shots on goal, but was held scoreless once again. He’s due
  • After scoring twice against Buffalo, Brayden Schenn added an assist against the Devils
  • Nevirth is expected to make the start in goal Friday against Buffalo
  • Steve Mason is now 0-7 in his career vs. the Devils
