Mason pitches 36-save shutout, Raffl pots winner, as Flyers blank Canucks 2-0

And that’s how you make your return to the lineup.

Steve Mason pitched a 36-save shutout, while Michael Raffl scored the game-winning goal 16:45 into the first period, leading the Philadelphia Flyers to a 2-0 win over the Vancouver Canucks at the Wells Fargo Center on Thursday evening.

Sean Couturier also scored for Philadelphia, who are now 5-2-1 in the month of December.

Steve Mason returned to the crease after giving way to Michal Neuvirth in the previous three games. The 27-year-old was outstanding in a game in which the Flyers were outshot 36-31. Mason’s best save came in the second period off Canucks’ blueliner Alex Edler. With Mason committed to Alex Burrows down low, the forward was able to ship a pass across the ice to Edler, who was staring at an open net. Mason reached across with the glove and absolutely robbed the defenseman to keep Vancouver off the board.

Raffl opened the scoring late in the first period after he redirected an Evgeny Medvedev shot past Canucks’ netminder Jacob Markstrom.

Mason kept the Canucks off the board in a second period that saw Claude Giroux ring the crossbar and Vancouver fire 16 shots on goal.

Couturier added an insurance marker with three minutes remaining in regulation after he buried a loose puck in the Canucks’ crease. The play was started by Wayne Simmonds, who made a nice move to get up-ice, before dishing to Jakuv Voracek at the blueline. Voracek fed the puck to Simmonds, who came in on Markstrom and fired a shot off the post. Couturier was in front to clean it up.

The Flyers are now 7-2-1 in their past 10 games.

Key Stats/ Takeaways

  • Sean Couturier has now scored in back-to-back games and is meshing very well on a dynamite second line that also includes Wayne Simmonds and Jakub Voracek
  • The Flyers have surpassed the Pittsburgh Penguins in the standings and are now two points back of the final wildcard spot. Not bad
  • Jakub Voracek collected an assist tonight and is now riding a three-game point streak. While he’s only scored twice, he’s now up to 20 points in 32 games on the season
  • Michael Del Zotto was a punishing force on defense tonight. He logged a team-high 25:30 of ice time and dished out five hits. Consistently one of, if not the best Flyers blueliners on the ice every game
  • This was the Flyers’ first home regulation win since Oct. 14 vs. the Chicago Blackhawks
