Terry Murray named an assistant coach in Buffalo

After three years behind the bench of the Phantoms, Terry Murray will leave the Flyers organization to join Dan Bylsma’s new coaching staff with the Sabres.

It looks like Murray spurned the Flyers in a way, as he had an assistant job on the table with Dave Hakstol for next season.

From May 29th: “[Hextall] did throw out whether I would be interested in something else in terms of an assistant role. Obviously, if there were another head coaching position with another team in the NHL, I would want to do that.

The other option was to go back to Allentown [with the Phantoms]. … We’ll take our time and see where it goes.”

Ron Hextall released a statement today: “We’d like to thank Terry for his years of loyal service to the Philadelphia Flyers organization and wish him nothing but the best in Buffalo. Moving forward, we will take our time in deciding what’s best for the Phantoms and will address this further tomorrow.”

Sam Carchidi and Tim Panaccio have speculated that Phantoms assistant coach Riley Cote is a candidate for the now vacant head coaching role in Lehigh Valley, as well as Flyers assistant Ian Laperriere.
